Venetian Islands: a historical background

 
During the 1900s, Miami Beach was still undeveloped and yes, unreachable. But many have seen its potentials like John S. Collins who was primarily a landowner and a farmer. He thought of building a bridge thru Biscayne Bay as a way to attract investors. The 2.5 mile- bridge was accomplished, and operational in 1913. Thus, it became the longest wooden bridge worldwide. During the Florida land boom in the latter part of the century, in the 1920s to be exact, all the initiatives were put into developing the islands as well as putting up seafront estates. It was at this time that more islands for the Biscayne Bay were projected, thus, the Rio Alto Island was born. Since then, they were able to sell lots extensively - with proposals for more roads, utilities, and sidewalks and finally, a new bridge replacing the wooden one. The new bridge consists of lift bridges and they named it the Venetian Causeway. It was finally finished in 1926 with the emergence of other islands within it. Biscayne was not part of this but was also developed for residential communities. Since the 1940s up to this time, the Venetian Islands have been home to many well-off tycoons and famed celebrities enticed by the charm and appeal that this secluded sanctuary offers.
